(Singapore, 9 February 2021) – The World Photography Organisation and Sony Singapore are delighted to reveal Chek Poh Wong as Singapore’s National Award winner for the Sony World Photography Awards 2021.
The National Awards program is an initiative set up by the World Photography Organisation and Sony to support local photographic communities around the world, with 53 countries taking part this year.
Over 330,000 images from 220 territories were submitted to the Sony World Photography Awards 2021 and over 165,000 were entered to the Open competition (from which the National Awards winner was selected).
Chek Poh Wong was anonymously selected by judges for his photograph “Turn 1 2 3 4 5”, entered into the Landscape category of the Open competition. His photograph showcases a panoramic view of unused taxis parked on the roof top of a building. It presents a dire economic situation brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has badly affected people’s livelihood. Although vaccines are ready, it will take a long time for everyone’s life to return back to normal.
Chek Poh Wong is a photography enthusiast, who is keen to challenge himself and push his photography boundaries. Starting his photography journey around 40 years ago, he experienced the move from film photography to digital medium and from dark room processing to photoshop workflow. He does not have any specific favorite subject or interest. He simply shoots anything that moves and doesn’t move.
Commenting on his win Chek Poh said: During my photography journey, I have taken part in numerous photography competitions. This Sony World Photography Awards 2021 – National Awards is by far the most prestigious award I have received, and it will be the most treasured. I am thrilled. Having said that, I am still not the best. There are still many things left to learn and explore in photography.
As Singapore’s National Award winner, Chek Poh Wong receives Sony digital imaging equipment.
The overall winners in the Student, Youth, Open and Professional competition of the Sony World Photography Awards 2021 will be announced on the 15 April 2021 via the World Photography Organisation’s digital and video platforms.
