Sony NEX-5 Flash Extender Hands-on
Hart Tan shows you how to achieve better flash photography with the NEX-5 Flash Extender accessory.
Sony’s E-mount camera system is a fascinating one. Despite being one of the newest systems in the market, its range of NEX cameras has proven to be an interesting and popular choice for consumers.

This is mainly because they allow users to create images that rival bigger and bulkier DSLRs with its APS-C sized sensor, while still remaining small enough be carried anywhere with ease.

Exmor™ APS HD CMOS
The Sony NEX-5 set comes with a bundled external flash which gives users extra flexibility when it comes to flash photography.
While diminutive in size, this flash has a huge flash power with a Guide Number of 7 which allows for proper exposure when shooting subjects 1-2 metres away.

However, sometimes when shooting wide-angle shots with the flash, a dark semi-circle shadow appears at the bottom of the image.

This shadow is caused by the lens and the hood being in the flash coverage area, as illustrated in the image above.   To avoid such an issue, a flash extender accessory can be used to push the flash coverage forward, thus staying clear of the lens and hood.
Here is the same image taken with and without the flash extender.

So next time if you need to take wide-angle group shots with your 18-55mm zoom lens, make sure you get the flash extender and always keep it handy with you.
