Preparation

Check the System Software Version

Follow the instructions below to check the system software version:

  1. Select MenuSetup6 → VersionBody.
  2. The system software version will be displayed.

Notes:

  • If the system software version is Ver. 2.03, the update is not required.
  • If the Date/Time setting screen appears when you turn on your camera, be sure to set the date and/or time to the correct values.

The latest version of the system software update is compatible with the following versions of macOS:

  • macOS 26
  • macOS 15
  • macOS 14

Computer Hardware

This system software update requires the following hardware:

  • Hard drive space: 600 MB or more
  • RAM: 600 MB or more

Note: Please close all other application software before updating the system software.

Power Requirements

  • Power source: Use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack (NP-FZ100).
  • The update can only be performed when the battery power level is (three bars) or more. We recommend you use a fully charged battery.

Other Hardware

  • Use the USB cable supplied with the camera.
    Note: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.

Important Notice

  • Close all other application software before updating the system software.
  • Use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack (NP-FZ100).
  • Do not remove the battery during the update as the sudden loss of power may cause the camera to stop working.
  • Remove the memory card from the camera before starting the update process.
  • The system software update will take approximately 15 minutes. Do not allow your computer to go into Sleep mode during this time.
    Note: If the computer does go into Sleep mode and the update is interrupted, the entire update process must be restarted.
  • Do not open About This System Software Updater in the System Software Updater menu as this may cause the software to crash.
  • Do not connect the camera to any device other than your computer.
  • Do not connect the camera and computer at this point.
  • Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
  • Follow the instructions in the System Software Updater window:
    1. Select MenuSetup3 → USB Connection.
    2. Check that Mass Storage has been selected.
      If a different mode is selected, change it to Mass Storage.
  • On Mac computers with an Apple silicon (Apple M1) processor, you need to change the security policy.
  • The About This Mac screen will show an item labeled Chip, followed by the name of the chip.
  • For more information, refer to the How to change the security policy on Mac computers with Apple silicon article.
  • For Mac computers with an Intel processor, this step is not necessary.

How to Download the Sony Camera Driver:

  1. Visit the Sony Camera Driver download page.
  2. Click the Download button.
  3. After reading the disclaimer, click Download.
  4. Save the file to the desktop of your computer (recommended).

How to Download the Updater:

  1. Click the Download button above.
  2. After reading the disclaimer, click Download.
  3. The Update_ILCE7CV203.dmg file will start downloading.
  4. Save the file to the desktop of your computer (recommended).

Step 1: Install the Sony Camera Driver

  1. Close all programs currently running on your computer.
  2. Double-click the Camera_Driver_2110a.dmg file you downloaded. Do not connect the camera at this point.
    Note: If you have already connected the camera to your computer, disconnect it before following this procedure.
  3. The Sony Camera Driver Installer is expanded.
  4. Double-click the SonyCameraDriver.pkg icon.
  5. The installer screen opens. Proceed as instructed.
    Read the Introduction displayed on the screen and press the [Continue] button at the bottom right of the screen to proceed.
  6. You will be prompted to allow the application to install new software. Enter the password for the administrator account, and then click Install Software.
    Enter it in the Password field in the center of the screen, and press the [Install Software] button at the bottom center of the screen.
    Notes:
    • If the operating system displays the System Extension Blocked dialog box, click the Open Security Preferences button. The macOS Privacy & Security screen opens.
      • The actual message varies depending on the operating system version.
      • Here, “Extension” refers to the Sony Camera Driver.
    • If the operating system does not display the System Extension Blocked dialog box, go to Step 2: Start the Updater.
  7. Press the Allow button in the Privacy & Security section of System Settings. If you cannot find the Allow button, try scrolling down the screen.
  8. If you are prompted to restart after clicking the Allow button, restart the computer and return to the beginning of the update procedure.
  9. If the Privacy & Security screen does not disappear, please close the window.

Step 2: Start the Updater

  1. Double-click the Update_ILCE7CV203.dmg file you downloaded. Do not connect the camera at this point.
  2. The Update_ILCE7CV203.dmg file is expanded.
  3. Double-click the SystemSoftwareUpdater icon.
  4. A message will prompt you to allow the application to make changes. Enter the password for the administrator account and then click OK.
    Enter it in the Password field in the center of the screen, and press the [OK] button at the bottom center of the screen.
  5. The System Software Updater will start.

    Notes:
    • If the system is not ready to start the update, an error message appears. Take the appropriate action according to the message, and then double-click the SystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.
    • If the message “You need to restart your computer” appears, restart the operating system, and then double-click the SystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.
    • If the message “You need to install Sony Camera Driver” appears, follow the procedure described in Step 1: Install the Sony Camera Driver, and then double-click the SystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.
    • If the message “Check the Privacy & Security setting” appears, perform Steps 7, 8 and 9 in the Step 1: Install the Sony Camera Driver section. Then restart the operating system and double-click the SystemSoftwareUpdater icon again.
  6. Turn on the camera and connect it to the computer using the supplied USB cable. USB Mode will appear on the LCD screen of the camera.
  7. Click Next. The current version number and updated version number will appear on the lower left side of the screen.
    IMPORTANT: Never turn off the camera or disconnect the USB cable while the update is in progress.
    Note: If the computer cannot find the device, the message “Could not find the camera for this update” will appear on the computer screen. Try the following:
    • Disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it.
    • If the computer has multiple USB ports, try a different port.
  8. After confirming that the current software version is Ver. 2.02 or earlier, click Next. If the current system software version is Ver. 2.03, the update is not required. In this case, follow the steps below:
    1. Disconnect the camera from the computer.
    2. Click Finish.
    3. Turn off the camera.
    4. Remove the battery pack.
    5. Reinsert the battery pack.
    6. Turn the camera back on.
    • When an update is required:
      The [Current Version] on the lower left of the screen is showing 2.02 or earlier, and the [Version after the update] is showing 2.03.
    • When an update is not required:
      The [Current version] and [Version after the update] are displayed as 2.03 at the bottom left of the screen.
  9. The camera will reset automatically.

    Note: The Loading icon may not be displayed depending on the OS version you are using.
  10. Start the update. After the camera automatically restarts, the update begins and a progress bar appears. The update takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.
    IMPORTANT: Never turn off the camera or disconnect the USB cable while the update is in progress.
  11. When the update is complete, the camera automatically restarts. When the LCD screen appears again, click Finish, and then disconnect the USB cable.

    Note: After restarting, a data recovery warning may be displayed. This is normal. Wait until the warning disappears.

Step 3: Confirm the System Software Version of Your Camera

  1. Select MenuSetup6 → VersionBody.
  2. The system software version will be displayed.

Questions & Answers

The Update Does Not Complete

If the camera screen remains black for more than 15 minutes, follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
  2. Remove the battery and AC adapter from the camera, leave them disconnected for a few minutes, and then insert the battery again or reconnect the AC adapter.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Turn on the camera and perform the installation process again.

After launching the “System Software Updater, the version confirmation screen does not appear, and a “Failed to update” message is displayed.

If this happens, it is possible that you have updated your camera in the past using the System Software Update Helper driver. Follow these steps to uninstall that software and restart the update:

  1. Download the System Software Update Helper driver again, and then uninstall the driver using the uninstaller tool in the Uninstaller folder of the downloaded file.
  2. After uninstalling the System Software Update Helper driver, double-click the Update_ILCE7CV203.dmg file to restart the update.
