Alpha Universe Story Detail
A class of its own. The perfect portrait lens you’ve been waiting for.

A lot goes into capturing the best portraits – you’ve got the perfect camera for it, but do you have the best lens? When you move up to a better-quality zoom that covers the focal lengths you need, you’ll realise the amazing difference in your photographs when you shoot with prime lenses.

Unparalleled speed and precision

Enter the NEW 50mm F1.2 G Master prime lens. Incorporating Sony’s most advanced optical design and manufacturing technologies, the SEL50F12GM delivers outstanding resolution and impressive shallow depth-of-field, making it the ideal choice for portraits, wedding photography and more.

Developed with four of Sony’s remarkably compact XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors in a floating focus mechanism, the lens provides the high thrust efficiency needed for responsive and highly accurate AF. Breathtaking resolution is maintained at all focusing distances while taking full advantage of the leading AF speed, precision and tracking available with all E-mount bodies.

With an 11-blade circular aperture mechanism and XA elements, expect gorgeous bokeh that can really make your subject stand out, especially at the lens’s maximum F1.2 aperture even in low-light conditions.

Capturing the essence of portraits with Wesley Loh

Commercial and Editorial photographer Wesley Loh has been photographing faces for about 33 years now. Here’s what he has to say about the NEW SEL50F12GM after giving it a spin.

“Even though I have used a wide variety of portrait lenses, I have always been drawn to the 50mm focal length. Over the last 6 years of trying out most of the usual 50-55mm lenses, the AF speed of the SEL50F12GM is by far the fastest and most impressive I have come across.

At a 50mm focal length, and an inherently wide aperture of F1.2, it is easy to separate the background from the subject. The 50mm focal length also gives me the flexibility to move in closer to my subject’s personal space and maintain a good consistent rapport.

With state-of-the-art control algorithms developed to improve control response and precision while minimising vibration and noise for fast AF performance, I can manoeuvre quickly when shooting in a tight space and concentrate more on framing my shot.

One other noticeable characteristic of the SEL50F12GM is the difference in bokeh from F1.2 to F1.4 aperture – you’ll be surprised it’s even creamier at F1.2, yet extremely soft and natural at the same time. This is great for small spaces or backgrounds that are close to the subject and it’s something professional photographers like myself will appreciate.

When it comes to portrait photography, flare control is something that I’m particularly concerned about, even on other good lenses. The SEL50F12GM has upped the game even further with a high percentage of flare reduction!

Would I recommend this lens? Yes, this is probably the best 50mm lens I’ve used. Ever.”

Bringing out bliss in wedding photography with Bryan Foong

As a veteran known for his bridal portraits, Wedding and Commercial photographer Bryan Foong, only has good words for the new lens.

“The SEL50F12GM is the perfect general focal length for both wedding day and bridal portraits photography to me. It gives me the flexibility to photograph close-up portraits with minimal distortion even when I move in closer to my subject. The lens is also wide enough for unobtrusive moments if I choose to photograph further away. At 50mm, I can also comfortably capture the details of the wedding such as pieces of jewellery, flowers, food, and décor.

I am also impressed by the contrast retained in a backlit situation. The sharpness of the lens wide open at F1.2 aperture was spot on, and the creamy bokeh got my subjects and I feeling dreamy.

With this lens, I was able to switch my focus quickly as the autofocus speed on this lens is as instantaneous as the decision to where I want the focus to be, enabling me to track my subject effortlessly.

My favourite part of the F1.2 aperture would be the ability to work in low-light conditions with only ambient light. This is especially helpful when shooting in a dimly lit ballroom at wedding dinner receptions or an outdoor alfresco venue, and it gives photographers the confidence to get the perfect shot.

Above all, what I find best about the SEL50F12GM is its more compact size compared to other 50mm lens in the market, that still produced the same outstanding quality as Sony’s existing G Master lenses. It offers rich expression in a large-aperture, and the size made it easy-to-handle and perfect even for walk-around use, without compromising on any of its features.
