Question

Troubleshoot poor picture quality from a Digital Video Recorder (DVR).

Answer

It is possible that the picture quality issue you are experiencing is due to the signal being received by the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) or the record settings selected in the DVR itself. Programs recorded on a DVR at lower quality settings are more likely to show video artifacts and pixelization. The signal source (antenna, cable, or satellite) may be experiencing some type of interference or degradation before it enters the DVR.

Keep in mind that not all digital signal sources are High Definition. In fact, a majority of digital signals are Standard Definition, which do not have the fine detail of a High-Definition signal. For further information about poor picture quality on a High-Definition Television (HDTV), click here.

IMPORTANT: The use of signal splitters can diminish reception. If signal splitters are being used to send the signal to multiple televisions throughout the home, then the signal strength may be too degraded to provide good enough reception to the DVR.

NOTE: If possible; use an HDMI, DVI, Component Video or S-Video cable to connect the TV, DVR, and signal source. These connection types offer the best picture quality, but are not available on all products.

  1. Ensure the cable from the signal source is in good condition and connected securely to the DVR.
  2. Ensure the cable between the DVR and TV is in good condition and connected securely to both devices.
  3. Set the record settings in the DVR for the highest quality; this is best for recording programs with a lot of action and movement, such as sports and movies.

The above information should help address and resolve your picture quality issues when watching recordings from your DVR. However, if you continue to experience problems, try connecting the signal source directly to the TV. If you have the same picture quality issues, then it may be necessary to contact your cable or satellite service provider.
